Pathways to a Self-Organising (Human) System

Tapping into the capability and the necessity of “self-organising” prepares a human being to deal with the unexpected - literally bypassing conscious thinking. In Feldenkrais lessons, the path to the self-organising system is via dedicating conscious attention built into conscious processes… such as listening to the words, understanding the movement instructions… and then attending to the sensations in order to refine the movement.
At the same time, we learn to attend to the global state of coordination in which all parts achieve their proper timing and their proper use of muscle force. The mobilisation needs to be sufficient, well balanced, and literally well-apportioned by the brain. Thus an “Awareness through Movement” lesson highlights the interplay between the conscious work of the student on the floor and their own nervous system.

Olena Nitefor and Kathryn Hume-Cook have known each other since 2016. Each have decades of experience as engaged and engaging Feldenkrais teachers. Both run full-time practices at home, and travel the world to share their delight in crafting deeply moving Feldenkrais lessons.
They share a love of the English language, as well as a love of clarity when using it. Over the past decade they have enjoyed many vital discussions about their shared enthusiasm for the Feldenkrais work. Experience this unique pairing of two teachers who both appreciate the extraordinary richness and depth of how ATM lessons can serve humans in their lives: an exploration of human phenomenology, reaching far beyond simply improving movement.

Pathways to a Self-Organising (Human) System
Self-organisation, also called spontaneous order in the social sciences, is a process where some form of overall order arises from local interactions between parts of an initially disordered system. Self-organised learning (SOL) rebuts that “the expert knows best” or that there is ever “the one best method.” Instead, it directs towards “the construction of personally significant, relevant and viable meaning.”
While this process can be guided, its discoveries are tested experientially by the learner. Feldenkrais “Awareness Through Movement” lessons are built around this principle. Utilising a phenomenological, subjective, first-person experience to dialogue with the brain, the lessons allow the learner to generate a more desirable order within themselves. In this series of public workshops, taught by Kathryn Hume-Cook & Olena Nitefor, you will experience this powerful capacity of your nervous system.
Series of 12 monthly Miniworkshops (online), Sundays in 2027
The Feldenkrais Method guides you to examine and reevaluate how you approach and carry out movement tasks - from the mundane, to the highly specialised coordination needed in the domains of music, dance, theatre and sports. By recalibrating, upgrading and refining habituated neuromuscular patterns, the ingenious lessons develop your ability to move and act more efficiently and elegantly. The lessons create situations in which you learn to recognise and utilise meaningful sensory feedback from your own system.
The monthly 4 hour Workshops on Sundays weave together an over-arching theme which explore principles and fundamentals of how the human nervous system functions; how the brain was designed to process sensory information in order to move through the environment; how human beings can best harness their attention and curiosity in ways which lead to choice, change and fulfilment.
These workshops are open to interested members of the public and graduated Feldenkrais Practitioners alike.
