"Am I doing this right?"

About what you learn when, for a whole hour, nobody tells you to copy one right answer.

01 - Starting point The question that comes back in every lesson

Someone lies on their back, knees bent, rolling the pelvis - a small movement, a few centimetres one way and the other. After a minute they lift their head and ask: "But am I doing this right?"

It is the most common question in the room. And the most interesting moment of the lesson, because the teacher does not do what the student expects. They do not demonstrate an ideal version to copy. Instead they say: "Notice which way it rolls more easily. Check whether you are holding your breath. See what happens with your eyes when the pelvis goes right." The question "am I doing it right?" goes unanswered - not because the teacher does not know the answer, but because in this task there is no single right one. There are several. The whole job is telling them apart.

And that is the real subject of this text. Not the back, not balance, not tension. Rather: what happens to a person when, for a whole hour, nobody gives them the right answer, and they still have to act.

02 - Context The world where the instructions run out

If you work with your head, you probably know the feeling. You do well where the task is clear. You get a problem with a defined shape and you solve it well. And then you land in a situation where it is not even clear what to call the problem - and suddenly all that skill drains away. What remains is a question that sounds familiar: am I actually doing this right?

More and more work has this shape today. You have to act on incomplete data. Notice that a strategy that was right six months ago has stopped fitting the conditions. Risk an experiment with no guarantee it will work. Abandon a previously good answer when the context has changed - and that is harder than it sounds, because we grow attached to good answers.

Labour-market reports notice this in their own way. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists flexibility and agility, creative thinking, and curiosity and lifelong learning among the skills growing in importance. You can argue about how much of this AI systems will take over, and it is better not to compete in forecasts. But the direction is clear: what has value is not only the skilled execution of a procedure, but the ability to cope where nobody has written the procedure yet.

And this is where it gets interesting, because that second ability is hard to learn from a lecture. It is hard even to describe it sensibly in words. But it can be experienced quite well - in movement, at a small scale, in safe conditions.

03 - The lesson What a Feldenkrais lesson actually is

Back to the room. The pelvis-rolling sequence is not accidental. In a moment the teacher will add an eye movement in the same direction as the pelvis, then in the opposite one. They will ask you to notice when the head starts wanting to lift on its own. They will return to the plain rolling and ask whether it is different now. Every step is planned, the order deliberate, the tempo watched. And yet at no point does anyone say "this is the correct way, now repeat it".

This combination usually surprises people. Because intuitively we think that if there is no single correct form, then anything goes - do whatever you like. And a Feldenkrais lesson is the opposite of anything goes. It has a strong structure, only the structure serves a different purpose than usual. It does not lead you to copy a model. It leads you to notice differences, and from those you choose the variant that happens to work in your body.

I would call it autonomy within a frame. You are not left alone - you have guidance, a task, reference points to come back to. But within that frame you have to find your next move yourself. The distinction matters, because many practices confuse the two: they call the absence of support "freedom" and leave a person with nothing to lean on.

A good lesson does the opposite - it gives you enough structure that you can safely not know.

It is also worth separating, right away, two modes of learning anything, because this is the axis of the whole matter. In one, you get a ready-made solution and you practise copying it and correcting deviations from the model. In the other, you compare variants and discover for yourself what works in this particular situation. Both are needed, and neither is better in isolation from the goal. Feldenkrais simply lives almost entirely in the second.

04 - The experience Four things you can experience there

Noticing your own strategy

Start with a truism: you cannot change what you cannot see. And most of how we move - and more broadly, how we act - happens below the threshold of attention.

In a lesson this surfaces quickly. You ask someone to turn their head to the side and you see that along the way they lift a shoulder nobody asked to join in. Or that the movement goes further on the inhale and blocks for no reason on the exhale. Or - the most common one - that they pull straight to maximum range, as if someone were grading them with a tape measure. None of this is a decision. It is a habit that was useful once and stayed longer than it was needed.

The mere possibility of seeing this is already something. Because only when you notice that you tense your neck every time you concentrate does the question even arise of whether you have to. Whether this translates, outside the room, into noticing your own strategies at work or in conversation - I do not know, and I will say so plainly in a moment. But the training in recognising an automatism is real and happens on the spot.

Creating alternatives

One distinction is needed here, because it is easy to get wrong. Performing ten different movements is not the same as comparing variants. You can wave in every direction and notice nothing. The difference is in the attention: the point is to do variant A, then variant B, and catch how they differ in feel - where it was lighter, what changed in the breath, which one gave more room.

Interestingly, research on motor learning points this way, though - to be clear - it was conducted outside Feldenkrais. For years movement variability was treated as a defect, noise to be eliminated. That picture has reversed: it turned out that variability, suitably organised, relevant to the task and coupled with feedback, can support exploration and learning (Wu et al., 2014; Dhawale et al., 2017). Instead of hunting for a single trajectory from the start, the nervous system samples possibilities and selects the better one. This is an indirect argument - Feldenkrais itself was not studied - but a lesson that deliberately multiplies variants and directs attention to the differences between them looks like an environment built for exactly this kind of learning.

Outside the room, what helps is something other than the repertoire itself. A repertoire without the ability to choose is not adaptability - it is just more options to get lost in. The value is in the combination: having variants and being able to sense which one fits. A lesson trains both at once, because it forces nothing and at the same time asks you to notice the effect.

Regulating effort

There is a moment in a lesson that changes a lot in people. They make a movement with full commitment, with visible effort, convinced that harder means better. Then you ask them to do the same thing with half the effort. And the movement suddenly goes further. More smoothly. At a lower cost.

It is a small discovery, and it overturns an assumption. Because many of us carry a quiet rule: if it is not working, try harder. Sometimes that is true. But surprisingly often more effort does not improve the movement, it stiffens it - and we do not notice, because we mistake trying for effectiveness.

I will not write that Feldenkrais builds resilience, because that is not known. I will write something more careful and, to my mind, more interesting. The practice lets you feel the difference between necessary and habitual effort - between how much an action really requires and how much you usually put into it out of momentum. And that is a useful distinction if we think of resilience not as an absence of tension and a quick return to normal, but as keeping access to action even when tension and uncertainty run in the background. The point is not to stop feeling difficulty. The point is not to lose, in the middle of it, every gear but one.

Acting before certainty arrives

And we arrive at what is, for me, the most important thing in this practice and the hardest to describe.

Back to the question from the beginning: "am I doing this right?". It usually appears at the same moment - a few seconds into an unfamiliar movement, before anything can be felt yet. This is the "I don't know yet" moment. And a Feldenkrais lesson does something unusual with it: it does not shorten it by supplying the answer, but it does not leave you alone in it either. Instead of a solution you get a way to begin. Make a small movement. Notice what came back in sensation. On that basis, choose the next one.

This is, at bottom, the loop of acting under uncertainty, only rehearsed on the safest possible material - your own quiet movement, where the cost of a mistake is close to zero. Draft what you are trying to do. Run an experiment. Read the result. Adjust the next step. Nobody is grading you, nothing breaks, and yet you learn to stay in contact with a task you do not yet understand - and to look for a solution instead of waiting for someone to hand it over.

Does the same thing then happen with a hard decision at work, where you also have to move without full data? It is a tempting supposition. The structure is the same. But a supposition is not yet a result, and that is exactly what the next section is about.

05 - Evidence What we know, and what we do not

One place for honesty here, so I do not have to come back to it at every paragraph.

Direct research on Feldenkrais is small, heterogeneous and often at risk of methodological bias. Earlier reviews - Hillier and Worley (2015) and Berland and colleagues (2022) - pointed to promising results for balance, mobility and pain, with effects comparable to other physiotherapy approaches. A newer, independent Australian evaluation within the Natural Therapies Review 2024 (published in 2025, using the GRADE method) rated the certainty of the evidence on health outcomes as low to very low, however. The practical conclusion: the results are promising, but they do not support strong clinical promises. Worth adding: that evaluation concerned health effectiveness and a funding decision - not the value of Feldenkrais as a learning environment, which is what this text is about.

Research on movement variability, feedback and focus of attention supports part of the mechanism proposed here, but it was mostly conducted outside Feldenkrais - an argument by analogy, not direct proof. The neuroimaging sometimes cited in this context is modest: the study by Verrel and colleagues (2015) is a small, exploratory piece of work showing short-lived changes in resting-state activity after a sensorimotor intervention - interesting as a signal, but not evidence of lasting learning or of a special mechanism.

And the most important thing: there are no good studies showing that anything from a Feldenkrais lesson transfers to work, decisions, creativity or working with a team. Transfer between distant domains is hard to demonstrate in general, and here it simply has not been measured properly.

That is why I treat Feldenkrais as a sensible practice environment and an interesting hypothesis - not as a proven training programme for future skills. It is less flashy than a marketing brochure and, in my view, considerably more honest.

06 - Experiment Two minutes to check for yourself

Best not to take my word for it. Sit comfortably, feet on the floor, and try something like this - slowly, without stretching, and stop at once if pain or clear discomfort appears.

First, calmly turn your head to the left, as far as it goes without effort. Remember where your gaze reaches. Come back to the middle.

Now turn your head to the left a few times, but with quite a small movement, and each time notice something different: once, whether the eyes travel with the head; once, whether the breath keeps flowing; once, whether the feet still rest quietly on the floor. Do not correct anything. Just notice.

Try one variant: turn your head to the left, but lead your eyes to the right, then the other way round. Without judging whether it "worked".

Finally, come back to the plain turn to the left and check whether the head moves differently than at the start.

The question at the very end is not "did you do it correctly?". It is: did any difference appear - and what let you notice it?

07 - Closing Back to the room

Back to the person who lay on their back and asked whether they were doing it right. It is a good question and an entirely understandable one. But there are moments when quickly establishing the correct answer is a less useful ability than something else: calmly gathering information, noticing your own strategy and finding the next possible move, before anyone says it is the right one.

You do not have to believe that an hour of movement will change how you work and decide. I have no proof of that and I will not pretend I do. But you can check something more modest and more tangible - what you learn when, for a whole hour, nobody tells you to copy one right answer. Sometimes what happens then says more about the way you act than many a test would.
